![]() Permute 2, 3 gives us the results (2, 3) and (3, 2). Notice how we consolidated the branches for the 2nd and 3rd numbers into three recursive calls?įor instance, the orange branches in the original solution are replaced with the recursive call “Permute 2, 3” in the solution above. Instead of listing all possible branches of the diagram, we can consolidate the branches for the second and third numbers, as shown in the diagram below: To do that, we need to look at the tree diagram differently. We can modify this diagram to represent the solution as a recursive solution. ![]() How to permute numbers using recursion?Ī tree diagram allows us to systematically list all possible permutations of a given set of numbers. The rest of the results can be obtained using the same logic. This gives us 1, 3, 2 as result (2nd result above). If the second number is 3, the third number must be 2. This gives us 1, 2, 3 as the result (1st result above). If the second number is 2, the third number must be 3. If the first number is 1, the second number can be 2 or 3 (shown in orange above). The diagram below shows how we can do it. Suppose we want to permute the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The most systematic way to do it is to use a tree diagram. How to permute numbers Mathematically?īefore proceeding with the programming for today’s challenge, we need to first know how to permute numbers mathematically. We’ll be using recursion with a for loop today, which is slightly more complicated than what we did in previous posts. If you are unfamiliar with recursion, I strongly recommend that you check out previous posts on recursion ( here, here and here). ![]() As mentioned in previous posts, recursion is an excellent approach to use when the solution to the problem depends on solutions to smaller instances of the same problem. We’ll be using recursion to solve the challenge in this post. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There’s much to be said for the way in which heraldry preserves our heritage. It was work with a holiday flavour, where people could mix outside their usual confines, and friendships were renewed annually.Īlistair Crowley said that “we may talk as we please of lilies, and lions rampant, and spread eagles in fields of d’or or d’argent, but if heraldry were guided by reason, a plough in the field arable would be the most noble and ancient arms” I’m glad then that the plough gets a look in on Maidstone’s coat of arms, in the motto “Agriculture and Commerce,” as well as in the reference to hops. Hop picking was a big job, and Irish travelers, Romany Gypsies, and women and children from the East End of London, came to town each year, looking to make extra money for the winter. It has a necklace of hops, a reference to the produce for which Kent used to be famous for. The discovery was at the beginning of man’s knowledge of dinosaurs.Ī horses head was also added to the coat of arms in 1949, and is derived from Kent County Council’s symbol. Mantell was able to make a reasonably accurate guess at what the creature would have looked like, though he did make the mistake of placing the thumb on the nose as he thought it was a horn. Bensted, knew he had something special, and got in touch with Gideon Mantell, a fossil obsessive convinced that some teeth he’d found in Sussex belonged to a creature hitherto undreamed of (despite well respected naturalist assuring him otherwise). The Iguanodon is a reference to a skeleton that was found in 1834 during the excavation of a quarry on the Queen’s Road. The coat of arms went unchanged for over four hundred years, until 1946, when Maidstone Borough Council asked for official permission to add the Iguanodon and the Lion that now support the shield, and it was granted in 1949. The golden lion in that particular pose (passant guardant), has been on the Royal Arms of England since the 12 th century. The red dots are from the arms of the Archbishop Courtenay, who built the majority of the Archbishop’s Palace as a resting point between London and Canterbury, as well as All Saints Church and the adjoining college. The horizontal blue band represents the River Medway, a draw for man since Stone Age times. At that time, it was only the central shield that existed, a blue band on a white background with three red dots around it, and a lion. It is in the records of one of these “Visitations” on 17th August 1619, that Maidstone’s coat of arms first appears. By the fifteenth century, there was such widespread use of coats of arms that the King commissioned an inspector known as the King of Arms to tour the country and record the designs being used by the nobility and the many boroughs, and to inspect their pedigree. Towns and boroughs soon wanted them too, and heraldry developed into a highly technical and exclusive art with strict rules and its own jargon, mainly drawn from French, the language of court. It was in Europe during the Middle Ages that people first hit on the idea of having crests that could be passed down for one generation to the next. ![]() ![]() ![]() Similar to those offered at The Masters, Butler’s sandwiches are served on white bread and offered in classic flavors like pimento cheese, egg salad and chicken salad. Equity: Not all students have equal access to devices or bandwidth. That is the starting point for empowering remote learners.” “You need to know where devices are physically located, whether they are they connected to the internet, how they are being used. “Visibility into the data is the first step that we can take,” Thomas says. Visibility: Why hasn’t a particular teacher implemented Zoom meetings? Why haven’t certain students shown up for online learning? Administrators can’t address these questions until they have visibility into online activity. ![]() School districts may encounter a number of tech-related hurdles as they shift to remote learning, including the following. But it requires that we choose to invest in quality rather than quantity, educators rather than bureaucrats, and take-home pay rather than bloated benefit packages. The Remote Learning Challenges Schools Are Facing And we can make that happen with the dollars we have. If we’d invested in raising teacher pay rather than adding teachers, the salary and benefit savings mean that median teacher pay in the U.S. had a student-teacher ratio of 27 to 1 today, it’s 16 to 1. ![]() Oh, and relative to student enrollment, the number of teachers has nearly doubled since 1970. No one wins when good teachers who want to work spend the summer tending bar. After accounting for holidays, leave, and such, teachers work 10 weeks fewer per year than other full-time professionals. Meanwhile, teachers typically work a 190-day contract year. Closing that gap would raise average teacher pay by about $5,000 a year. The comparable private sector figure is 71 percent. Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab has estimated that just 66 percent of teacher compensation goes to wages the rest to health care and retirement costs. Dollars are adding administrative bodies rather than boosting educator compensation. ![]() Meanwhile, the ranks of district administrative staff grew by 88 percent. Well, keep in mind that, between 20, U.S. How can these numbers actually add up? If raising teacher pay is this manageable, how come we haven’t done it already? It dramatically raises teacher pay, gives educators more professional autonomy, shrinks the bureaucracy, and permits schools to hire more selectively. In those cases, new revenues may make sense, if used to fund a redesign rather than to subsidize the status quo. Now, while this would push average teacher pay well over $100,000 in some states, there are others where it wouldn’t suffice. The result: teacher salaries of $81,000 for 10-month and $101,000 for 12-month positions. Teachers could grow professionally and assume a larger role in training, curriculum development or parent engagement without having to leave the classroom. Use the savings to fund 12-month lead teacher positions for one in six teachers, with salary and leave bumped accordingly. This would put the administrative body count back where it was during the Obama presidency, with administrative ranks still 25 percent larger than in 2000. Trim the ranks of 400,000 school and district administrators by 20 percent. Such a shift would particularly help attract new teachers and career-changers. Revamp benefits to reflect private sector norms, increasing salary from 66 percent of compensation to 71 percent. Putting the savings into teacher salaries would increase pay by $10,000. Take the current national level of teacher pay: $66,745.Īllow natural attrition to reduce the teaching force by 10 percent (given enrollment declines, this would increase student-teacher ratios by one to two kids per teacher). As I suggest in The Great School Rethink, that’s an attainable goal even without new funds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() How does the reflected light travel from the object to your eyes? The law of reflection states: The angle of reflection, θ r θ r, equals the angle of incidence, θ i θ i. Whenever we look into a mirror or squint at sunlight glinting from a lake, we are seeing a reflection. ![]() Typically, if the surface of a transparent material is smooth, such as that of a window pane, light is transmitted partially and reflected partially. It may also be transmitted through a transparent material, such as water or glass. Light often is partially absorbed and partially reflected. Some colors of light may be absorbed and others reflected. Light can be absorbed at the surface of an opaque object. Recount and explain all the possible interactions of light with matter. Indicate that the terms right angle, perpendicular, and normal line all mean the same thing: a vertical line at a 90° angle to a flat surface. The geometry of the path of a bouncing ball is similar to that of light, but what happens at the point of impact is different at the molecular level. It is acceptable to visualize light rays as laser rays (or even science fiction depictions of ray guns).Įxplain that light bounces is a simplification. Here it means a straight line that originates from some point. It then continues in a straight line-that is, as a ray. Light may change direction when it encounters the surface of a different material (such as a mirror) or when it passes from one material to another (such as when passing from air into glass). In all these cases, light is modeled as traveling in a straight line, called a ray. Light can also arrive at an object after being reflected, such as by a mirror. Light can travel to an object through various media, such as air and glass. It can come directly from the source through empty space, such as from the Sun to Earth. There are three ways, as shown in Figure 16.2, in which light can travel from a source to another location. There are six possible ratios therefore, there are six such functions. Trigonometric functions are ratios of the lengths of two sides of a right triangle. In this chapter, we apply equations that use trigonometric functions that describe the properties of angles. In this chapter, we are focused on the first three ideas. Geometry is the study of relationships involving points, lines, angles, and shapes. The lines must be straight lines for the number to have meaning. Recall that, in geometry, angles are numbers that tell how far two straight lines are spread apart.
